In late July, I made my third visit (and first in two years) to Togakushi Shrine in Nagano Prefecture. I first came here exactly three years ago. Nestled in a deep green mountain valley, with several shrine buildings lined up, this place truly feels like a power spot steeped in Japanese mythology. For more details, see here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My first visit happened on the very first snowfall of the season, and the scene was breathtakingly beautiful. Since it was during the COVID period, there were very few people\u2014truly a sacred atmosphere. The cedar-lined path leading to the Okusha (Inner Shrine) was absolutely stunning. As I walked in the silent snowfall, I found myself moved to tears, thinking, \u201cI\u2019m so glad I was born on Earth, in Japan.\u201d (No exaggeration\u2014totally real!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time, visiting at the end of July, the greenery was at its peak. We set off early in the morning when few people were around, and enjoyed the birdsong and cicada chorus as we climbed about 2 km of gently sloping mountain path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you pass through Suijinmon, you enter a grove of ancient cedars\u2014\u201crows\u201d doesn\u2019t quite capture it. These towering giants, some hundreds of years old, soar skyward, making you feel wonderfully small in comparison. (That round back in the shot is me.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a rainfall, the temperature dipped, and the forest floor sprouted mushrooms in abundance (photo by Satomi). Since this is a national park area, you\u2019re not allowed to collect anything\u2014and in any case, gathering plants or fungi at shrine or temple precincts is generally prohibited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On our way back, we even spotted a car driving down the path\u2014so rare that Nakauchi-san snapped a photo. Can you feel the majesty of those cedars? I was struck by how their bark twists so gently\u2014makes me wonder if cellulose fiber patterns are at play (just my researcher\u2019s daydream).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I get so much energy from this place that I think once a year is plenty. By the way, my omikuji (fortune slip) was \u201ckichi\u201d (good fortune), filled with nothing but positive predictions\u2014what a happy way to leave!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Togakushi Shrine\u2014especially the Okusha\u2014is a precious place where you can experience the grandeur of nature and the depth of Japanese culture. These extreme weather events lately are surely signs of climate change, and I\u2019m constantly brainstorming what we can do to help preserve places this beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
