From September 10 to 12, 2025, the EAEJ (European Japan Experts Association) International Conference 2025 was held at Shinshu University in Nagano, Japan.

EAEJ, founded in 1995, is an international network that connects Europe and Japan. It brings together experts from academia, industry, and government to foster interdisciplinary cooperation and dialogue. The theme of the 2025 conference was:

✨ “How to Inspire Young People in Japan and Europe
(a) to Address Science-based Solutions for Multiple Local and Global Challenges &
(b) to Design Future Societies for Living in Harmony?!”

I gave a presentation during the workshop on September 11.

📅 Presentation on Wednesday, September 11
Workshop 3
Enabling the Younger Generation for International Collaboration
Moderation: Prof. Dr. Kiyoshi Tanaka (Shinshu University), Sabine Ganter-Richter (Network for Science)

In this session, young researchers (mainly students) gave short talks of about 10 minutes each, sharing their international experiences. Many exchange students and those who had studied abroad spoke about their journeys.

A common theme among all of them was the courage to step out of their “comfort zone.”

After the talks, we held an open discussion where every participant spoke up, creating a truly free and engaging dialogue.

In my presentation, I introduced my collaboration with researchers Henri-san and Marta-san from Luke (Natural Resources Institute Finland) and shared my personal thoughts on the meaning of international cooperation.

I first met Henri-san and Marta-san in January 2023, during a visit to Luke in Finland, a leading institute in forest science and bioeconomy research. This visit was part of a program supported by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to develop human resources for the bioeconomy.

At Luke’s Joensuu campus, which is located alongside the University of Eastern Finland, I participated in free discussions on bioeconomy and visited the rich forests and forestry sites. It was there that I learned about their project called MycoTech—research into creating new materials from mushrooms. This encounter became the inspiration for me to begin my own research on mushroom pulp.

Later that year, in December 2023, Henri and Marta came to Japan. At that time, I was working as an assistant professor and served as their host. We spent about a month together, not only trying out joint experiments but also enjoying cultural exchanges like holding a takoyaki party. Sharing daily life together deepened our friendship beyond research.

When I later moved to Miyazaki University on a solo assignment, I often felt lonely. But one summer day, a surprise arrived—a postcard from Santa Claus. It read:

“Moi Satomi, Hiro and Marta and Henry told me that you being very good this year. I am looking forward to meet you in person. Santa.”

This was actually a surprise arranged by Henri-san, Marta-san, and my colleague Hiroya Nakauchi. I was deeply touched. Even from afar, I realized that friendship continues to connect us. It gave me courage and reminded me that I was not alone.

Even now, we stay in touch through a WhatsApp group between Luke and Shinshu University. Most of our exchanges are about everyday joys and nature—sometimes including beautiful photos of the aurora. Of course, we also talk about research, and we share funding opportunities with hopes of building future collaborations.

What I value most in international exchange is not just producing research outcomes but also deepening human connections. Sharing small events and celebrating little joys together—that, I believe, is the true secret to sustaining collaboration.

To close, I shared this message:

“We never know where in life we will meet true friends. So I want to treasure each encounter. It is really a once-in-a-lifetime meeting.”

In Japanese, we call this ichigo ichie (一期一会). We never know when and where we will meet true friends, and that is why I want to cherish each encounter.

I am deeply grateful for these precious connections, and also to the professors (especially Prof. Sameshima) who gave me the chance to join the Finland visit.

At the end of my presentation, one of the organizers told me, “Next time, it will be your turn to connect someone else.” With a straightened back, I answered, “Of course!”

Moving forward, I will continue to cherish ichigo ichie—treasuring every encounter, connecting, and expanding friendships both in Japan and abroad. 🌱
