こんにちは！ ６月５日から１６日までフィンランドから研究者の方が２名信州大学に滞在する機械があり、私はそのホストを務めました。今回は私がフィンランドの研究者と共同研究を行った際の経験から感じたことや気付きを共有したいと思います。
異文化理解
まず初めに、フィンランドの研究環境についてです。驚いたことの一つは、フィンランドのVTTでは、修士で就職してから論文を数報出した後に博士号を取得する方もいるという事実でした。これは日本の国立研究機関の慣習とは大きく異なり、一般的に博士号がなければ研究職につくことが難しいという状況とは対照的です。また、フィンランドの大学で全ての授業が英語で行われているという情報も、言語教育への積極的な取り組みとして印象深かったです。
コミュニケーション
私自身、英会話はあまり得意ではありませんが、英語によるコミュニケーションはなんとか行うことができました。実験に関するディスカッションは比較的スムーズに行えた一方で、日常的な雑談の部分では少し苦戦しました。ここで私が学んだことは、日本語でも英語でも、雑談はコミュニケーション力を鍛える大切な要素であるということです。音楽や映画について話すと、コミュニケーションが活発になることも発見しました。
新たな研究手法や視点
研究の観点から言うと、フィンランドの研究者と働くことで、私の顕微鏡観察技術が研究の進展に大きく寄与できる可能性を実感しました。彼らが日本に来る理由が、海外の研究者とのつながりを作ることと、サンプル調製や観察方法などのノウハウを直接学ぶためだと知った時、私自身の技術に対する自信が深まりました。これからも、世界で必要とされるスキルとして顕微鏡観察技術を磨いていくつもりです。
人間関係の築き方
フィンランドの研究者との2週間の滞在を通じて、お互いの理解を深めることができました。しかし、気を使いすぎて疲れることもありました。次回会うときは、もっとリラックスしたコミュニケーションを心掛けたいと思います。
問題解決スキル
実際に実験を始めてみると、当初の計画から大きく変更することとなりました。私たちは最初に、意義のあるデータを確実に得られる共焦点レーザー走査型顕微鏡観察にフォーカスしました。次に、計画していたx線顕微鏡の観察がうまくいかなかったため、FE-SEMの観察実験に切り替えました。これらの変更は少しハードなスケジュールになりましたが、休養日を設けるなどの工夫を通じて、全体として無理のないバランスの良い実験計画を立てることができました。
セミナー主催の挑戦
特筆すべきは、英語でのセミナーの主催です。これは初めての試みであり、私にとっては大きな挑戦でした。事前に何度も練習を重ね、当日はなんとかやりきることができました。セミナー後の懇親会では、参加者の皆さんが楽しそうにしているのを見て、努力が報われた瞬間でした。自分の成長だけでなく、参加者たちが有意義な時間を過ごせたと感じることができ、とても嬉しい気持ちになりました。
以上、フィンランドの研究者との共同研究から得られた貴重な経験と学びを共有させていただきました。これらの経験は私の研究キャリアに大いに寄与しており、今後も海外との共同研究を通じて多様な視点と経験を積んでいきたいと思います。
“Research Collaboration with Finland: 6 Lessons Learned”
Hello! From June 5th to 16th, I had the opportunity to host two researchers from Finland at Shinshu University. I would like to share some insights and reflections from my experience collaborating with them.
Understanding Different Cultures
Firstly, concerning the research environment in Finland. One of the things that surprised me was the fact that at VTT in Finland, some people get a job after obtaining a master’s degree, publish a few papers, and then go on to earn a doctorate. This is markedly different from the norms of national research institutes in Japan, where it is generally challenging to get a research position without a doctorate. Also, I was deeply impressed by the fact that all the lectures at Finnish universities are conducted in English, which signifies their active approach towards language education.
Communication
Personally, I am not very good at English conversation, but I was able to communicate in English somehow. While discussions related to experiments went relatively smoothly, I struggled a bit with casual everyday conversations. What I learned here is that small talk, in Japanese or English, is an essential element for enhancing communication skills. I discovered that conversations became more lively when we discussed topics like music and movies.
New Research Methods and Perspectives
From a research perspective, working with Finnish researchers made me realize that my microscopy observation skills could significantly contribute to the progression of our research. When I learned that the reason they came to Japan was to build connections with researchers abroad and to directly learn the know-how of sample preparation and observation methods, I felt more confident in my skills. Going forward, I intend to refine my microscopy observation skills, which are needed worldwide.
Building Relationships
Through the two-week stay with the Finnish researchers, we were able to deepen our understanding of each other. However, there were times when I became tired from being too considerate. Next time we meet, I aim to focus on more relaxed communication.
Problem-Solving Skills
Once we started the actual experiment, we had to make significant changes from the initial plan. First, we focused on confocal laser scanning microscopy observation, which assured us meaningful data. Then, when the planned X-ray microscopy observation didn’t go well, we switched to FE-SEM observation experiments. These changes made the schedule a bit hectic, but through strategies such as designating rest days, we managed to create a well-balanced experimental plan that was manageable overall.
The Challenge of Hosting a Seminar
The hosting of a seminar in English is worth mentioning. This was a new endeavor for me and a significant challenge. I practiced many times in advance, and somehow managed to pull it off on the day. At the social gathering after the seminar, seeing the participants enjoying themselves was a rewarding moment for me. I was delighted not only with my growth but also by the fact that the participants had a worthwhile time.
In conclusion, I’ve shared the invaluable experiences and lessons I’ve gained from the joint research with the Finnish researchers. These experiences contribute significantly to my research career, and I hope to accumulate diverse perspectives and experiences through future international collaborations.
