I do not like the capitalist society that consumes everything and seeks profit excessively. However, to revitalize local areas and Japan, valuable things are indeed needed.
Sometimes I worry if my actions might be greenwashing, but the fact remains that money is necessary, and I can’t help but consider whether something generates profit. This causes internal conflict and makes me feel uneasy because, to achieve sustainability, I believe that we must be willing to let go of profits at least temporarily.
In other words, making a profit and saving the planet are quite difficult to achieve simultaneously. Knowing this, I aim to collaborate while battling my own internal contradictions.
It can be challenging if basic values don’t align. What I’m trying to say is that campaigns pushing SDGs just because they are profitable and aiming for a sustainable society can be disheartening if they are too transparent.
I would be truly happy if we could genuinely face environmental and social issues and aim to do things perfectly, even if we have to make compromises.
It may sound idealistic, but I believe that without moving forward while grappling with these conflicts, the world won’t change. When explaining to the general public or companies, I sometimes hide my true stance to make it more appealing. I feel uneasy about myself while doing this.
Since we can’t make a difference if people don’t listen, we need to be creative in how we communicate. I endure it with a sales smile.Perhaps this battle with contradictions is the fate researchers must bear.
I wrote this at length to ensure I don’t lose sight of my true stance while juggling different selves. This isn’t just about environmental issues; it might also relate to the recent discussions on preferential treatment for women in certain contexts, which have been trending on X.
By the way, the title “Divided Self” comes from Keiichiro Hirano’s book “What Is Me: From Individual to Divided Self.
